I'm sure that you've wondered about the origin of hot cross buns and the meaning of the stripes on them.
Hot cross buns were originally baked and consumed on Good Friday in memory of the scourging and death of Jesus Christ.
Whether you believe or not in all of the nonsense that christians expound about Jesus and Easter - death and resurrection etc. it seems to be a fact that a man named Jesus existed and he was badly treated by the Jewish authorities and Romans alike. He was tortured and executed.
The scourging would have left terrible scars on Jesus' body. Sometime and somewhere in the early centuries AD a baker decided to replicate the buttock scars on a small bun.
This is why we have hot cross buns today.
